Associate Spotlight – Seth Mathews

Seth Mathews, AVP – Controller

Tell us something about your professional development journey. My career path can be best described as ‘circuitous.’ Since 2005 I have worked various positions at three different banks, starting as a teller, working through several banker roles, and finally moving into accounting and finance. There have been many ‘sink or swim’ moments along the way, which, although intimidating, have been great confidence builders. I have also been fortunate to have (and continue to have) mentors over the years who have been kind enough to share their knowledge and support but also have known when to step back and allow me to make my own mistakes.

What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?Don’t be afraid of making mistakes; experience comes from making mistakes, and I have a lot of experience! Take the initiative when you discover an unfulfilled need or a better way of doing something. Tradition is great for holidays but less than ideal in a dynamic banking world. Try to step outside of your comfort zone; it may be scary, but that is what makes it worthwhile.

What’s something surprising that not many people know about you? I do quite a bit of sewing; my sewing machine is on my workbench more than any other tool. I struggle slightly with stitching curves, but I can knock out rectangles like a champion!

Why did you choose to pursue a career in your field? After working as a teller for a couple years I discovered that I really enjoyed the bookkeeping and problem-solving aspects of banking. That inspired me to enroll in night school at St. Scholastica to earn my degree in accounting. It was challenging, but also a lot of fun!

What’s your favorite memory from working at the company? It is hard to pin down one specific memory, but I would say my takeaway from being an NBC associate is the overwhelming support I receive from our leadership. I have participated in many of the bank’s innovations and have always felt that my opinions and efforts are valued.

What is one thing you can’t live without? Books. Just ask anyone who walks by me during lunch!
