Associate Spotlight – Cindy Theien
What accomplishments are you most proud of in your career?
There are so many when I think back on the last 45 years! Banking was my life, second to my family. I’m fortunate to have been part of many special projects, process improvements, and professional and personal growth opportunities. Some of my achievements include the WI Graduate School of Banking, ICBA Certified Community Bank Compliance Officer, multiple AIB Teacher of the Year awards, and WBA Lifetime Service Award.
How do you handle change and challenges in the workplace?
Research and ask questions! Discover the what and why, while considering the impact to stakeholders, both internal and external.
Share an experience where you actively participated in a community initiative.
My favorite is being a co-organizer and spokesperson of the former Superior-Douglas County N.O.W. (Nutrition on Weekends) program. This initiative started as a grass-roots idea in November of 2009 with eight of our Superior-Midtown associates who were looking for a purposeful giving project during the holiday season. Our discussions surrounded the idea of helping children with food insecurities. We coordinated efforts with the United Way, Superior School District, and Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank and between February 2010 and October 2014 we had supplied roughly 11,000 bags/backpacks of food, which averages out to be about 100 students per weekend. The program continued to grow and has become part of the services provided by the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank backpack program.
What advice would you give to someone recently starting out in their career?
Be curious! Desire to learn as much as possible about the industry you’re in. Smile, be kind, and be respectful to all.
What are a few of your fondest memories at NBC?
The great friendships that I’ve made over the years with both customers and co-workers, the fulfilling sense of accomplishment when a goal was met, and I can’t leave out the silliness and creativity that was always had at Halloween.
What are your plans for the next 5 years?
To spend time with family and friends, travel more, and complete projects both at home and in Florida. Another big goal is to visit Australia and New Zealand within the next five years!
